How to read an Eyeglass prescription?

An eyeglass prescription is an order written by an eyewear prescriber, such as an optometrist or ophthalmologist, that specifies the value of all parameters the prescriber has deemed necessary to construct and/or dispense corrective lenses appropriate for a patient.

The prescription could to correct a problem for the distance or near. The Doctor will tell you what the purpose of the prescription.

The components you will see in your prescription are the OD, OS, Sphere, Cylinder, Axis and Add or Addition if you need bifocal lenses. OD refers to a Latin abbreviation for the Right Eye and OS for Left eye.

The Sphere or SPH component comes in Minus (-) values to correct near-sightedness and Plus (+) values for far sightedness. If it is written with a PL or Plano word it means no value or 0.00. The Cylinder or Cyl refers for the correction for the Astigmatism and it will always be with an Axis. The Axis is the location of the cylinder that the patients need to see clearly. If it is written with a DS you have no Astigmatism and it means a 0.00 with no Axis.

Refer to this example:
OD +1.00 -1.25 X 180: Right Eye with a +1.00 Sphere, -1.25 cylinders in an Axis of 180. Remember that a prescription like this could have the purpose to see clear at distance objects or to see clear for reading. It is important to know the purpose of the prescription. If the prescription has ADD this means you need bifocals. The prescription is design with lenses to see at near and not block the vision at distance.

The number always will be on Plus (+) values. The ADD is the amount of prescription that have to be prepare over the distance prescription to make the patient see clearly at near. The Prescription will be written like this: Example: OD +1.00 -1.25 X 180 ADD +2.00.

Single Vision?Single Vision What is a Single Vision Lens? Single Vision is a lens that will have one correction in the entire lens. Commonly are used for Distance correction or for near or reading. Lately the Single Vision lenses are used for visual fatigue symptoms with Anti-Reflective and Blue Filter treatment.

Bifocal?Bifocal Lens What are Bifocal Lenses? Bifocals are lenses design for patients that have two different prescriptions; one is to correct the vision at distance and another for near or reading. In this way it is avoid using two different glasses. The distance prescription will be at the top of the lens and the near or reading will be in the bottom. There are two main types of Bifocals; one is with a line, named Flat-Top design and the other is a no line lens named Progressive. The more esthetic and comfort Bifocal, in most cases, is the Progressive. The reading prescription in integrated in the bottom portion of the lens with no visible lines. The design helps to see at intermediate distances as in the case to see a Laptop or a cell phone.

PD*?Where do I can find my PD or pupils distance measurements? The Pupil measurement or PD (pupils distance) is the distance between centers of each pupil. This measurement is made in millimeter and is done by an Optician or the technician authorized to sell glasses in an optical store. It could be found in the prescription or you can ask for the measurement in any Optical Store. Be sure of your most exact PD because this will ensure the best correction.

Clear PLASTIC CR39 ($21.00)?How do I select the best lens material for my glasses? There are many type of material for the prescription of the glasses. The CR39 and the Polycarbonate are the most used material due to its qualities. All our lenses come with 100% UVA and UVB protection. If your prescription is between Plano (0.00) to 2.00 diopters in the sphere, any lens material would be good. If the numbers are larger than 2.00 diopters we recommend you choose lens material like the Polycarbonate. The Polycarbonate material is high impact resistance that makes the lenses look thinner and lighter. Important note: Prescription for children has to be chosen in Polycarbonate material. This material has the best protection on impact resistance. Why I have to choose Polycarbonate lens material instead of Regular plastic CR39 for my child prescription? Because of FDA regulations, the lenses of the eyeglasses of children should resist impact and rupture for the safety of their eyes. In EYEWAREOptical.com we are concern about the security of our children, therefore at identifying the user as a minor the system will register the Polycarbonate lens. Do you provide other type of Material Lenses? We are currently only offering CR 39 and Polycarbonate material.
